Amerika in den 50ern war ein adrettes Heim von der Stange, ein Röhrenradio im Wohnzimmer und ein Chevrolet vor der Tür. Man lauschte noch dem braven Big Band Swing der 40er, während in den Metropolen der Blackbeat aufkeimte: Bebop, Jazz und Rythm 'n' Blues liess die Hüften schwingen und formte den Rock 'n' Roll. In den Vereinigten Staaten herrschte jedoch damals noch die Trennung zwischen Schwarz und Weiss, und so kam der Rock 'n' Roll erst durch Bill Haley zu seinem vollen durchbruch, mit seinem Hit "Rock Around the Clock". Die Hüter der bürgerlichen Moral waren entsetzt, während James Dean Wettrennen fuhr und Elvis Presley kreischende Mädels reihenweise in Ohnmacht fallen ließ. Jack Kerouac und Godfather William S. Burroughs und fuhren mit Fluppe im Mundwinkel quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten in die Freiheit. Die Plattenindustrie boomte und zogen Subkulturen wie den politischen Folk eines Woodie Guthrie und den Cool Jazz eines Miles Davis mit sich. Die Langspielplatte reifte zum Massenprodukt, und in jedem Diner stand eine Jukebox in der Ecke.
Die Dame von Welt trug Petticoat und Pfennigabsätze, der Herr Blue Jeans und das Haar mit viel Pomade zur Rockabilly-Tolle geformt. Nachtschwärmer steckten auf Steh-Parties die Köpfe zusammen oder standen an kilometerlangen Tresen aus der Zeit von Edward Hopper. Dann ging es raus in die Nacht, das neu entdeckte wilde Leben genießen.
